The park is named after former Edmonton Mayor Ivor Dent, who served as Edmonton’s mayor from 1968 to 1974 and was instrumental in bringing the 1978 Commonwealth Games to the city. The park site previously served as the Commonwealth Games shooting range, making the naming a fitting tribute to Dent’s legacy of athletic excellence and community building.

The park is purposefully designed to balance premier sport infrastructure with environmental stewardship. In recognition of this commitment, the park was awarded the Charles Labatiuk Award for Environmental Excellence, a prestigious honour presented by the City of Edmonton. The Ivor Dent Sports Park team earned the award for its innovative stormwater management system that captures, retains, and reuses all on-site stormwater for field irrigation—an approach rarely implemented in Alberta or Canada. Sustainability initiatives also include preserving natural wetland features that support stormwater management, and applying environmentally responsible practices to control weeds and repurpose natural site materials as fertilizer. Together, these efforts reflect a long-term commitment to sustainable park design and operations.

Park infrastructure including roadways, parking areas, site grading, landscaping, and power servicing was developed by the City of Edmonton. The individual sport venues within the park were developed by the park’s partner organizations, each of whom plays an active role in the ongoing care and operation of their respective sites.

Park partners are responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and stewardship of their facilities, which includes field upkeep, turf management, scheduling, equipment maintenance, and ensuring safe, high-quality playing conditions. This collaborative model allows each organization to apply sport-specific expertise while maintaining consistent standards across the park. Working together with the City, park partners help ensure the entire site remains a well-maintained, welcoming, and high-performing destination for athletes, organizers, and visitors alike.
